Women’s Volleyball team falls to Brazil to end pool play

GWANGJU, South Korea – July 6, 2015 – The U.S. Women’s University Games Team lost to Brazil 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 in its final World University Games pool match in Gwangju, South Korea.
The U.S., which concluded Pool C with an 0-3 record, moves into the 9-16 classification round. The Americans will face Chile on July 8 in its next match.
Opposite Khat Bell (Mesquite, Texas, University of Texas) led the USA for the third match in a row with 10 points, all on kills via 20 attacks. Outside hitter Nicole Walch (Stuart, Fla., Florida State University) tallied six kills on 22 attacks. Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii, University of Missouri), playing at the other outside hitter position, matched Walch’s point total of six with five kills on 15 swings and an ace.
Middle blockers Paige Tapp (Stewartville, Minn., University of Minnesota) and Nia Grant (Warren, Ohio, Penn State University) each tallied four points in the loss. Alex Holston (Olney, Md., University of Florida), who started the final set, recorded three kills on 12 attacks from her opposite position. Middle blocker Briana Holman (DeSoto, Texas, University of Nebraska) tallied two kills in the second set. Setter Micha Hancock (Edmond, Okla., Penn State University) registered a block while starting the first two sets before Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio, University of Michigan) started the final set.
Laura Larson (Lakeville, Minn., University of Arizona) tallied eight excellent receptions on 20 attempts as the American libero. Outside hitter Emily Sklar (San Jose, Calif., Duke University) saw action in the first and third sets but did not record a point.
Brazil out-blocked the U.S. 11-3 and held a 7-1 advantage in aces. The South Americans converted 38.3 percent of their attacks compared to the USA’s 30.8 percent. Brazil’s reception produced a 48.8 percent excellent percent on 43 chances to the Americans’ 39.7 percent.
