History

Although there is a long history of using swords as weapons in the Western world, it was not until the Roman Empire that it began to take shape as a systematized sport.

During the Roman Empire, a sword of 40-86cm length was used. A famous sworsman during that time was even recognized among government officials and was put in charge of training combat techniques in the military.

In mid-16th century, advancements allowed replacement of heavy armors with lighter uniforms, which led to the use of lighter swords and taking the form of modern day fencing.

The sword used at the time was the rapier, a Spanish and Italien sword with long, narrow blades. Dagger or clock were also used in addition to the rapier.

A Frenchman named Henry de Sainct Didier created the French style of sword techniques that is used today, and daggers were no longer used. The three typrs of swords used today are Fleuret, Sabre, and Épée.
