History

“Association football” is the official name of the game. It is referred to as “football” or “soccer” in some countries, derived from the “soc” in “association.” It is believed to have originated from a simple ball passing game played in Ancient Greece in 7~6 BC with a ball called “episkyros,” while some say that a similar game was played in Ancient China even before then. The game spread widely throughout the military and was introduced in England by Roman soldiers. This game, called “harpastum” is believed to be the origin of football in England. Football became more structured and began to spread to other parts of the world via foreigners who would take it back to their home countries or via ministers, missionaries, soldiers and merchants. With its growing popularity, the international football body FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) was formed in 1904 and currently has over 200 member countries. Football has been included on the programme of the Olympic Games since 1900, and other international football events include World Cup, Women’s World Cup, and U-20 World Cup.

Football was introduced in Korea by the crew of the British Royal Navy ship “Flying Horse”, which landed at Incheon port in 1882 during the 19th year of King Gojong’s reign. It began to spread widely when a government school in Seoul included the sport on their curriculum in 1904. It began to take form of an official competitive sport with proper equipments under standard international rules in 1920s. The first official football game was held in 1921 and the Korean Football Association was established on May 22, 1928, laying the foundation for the spread and development of soccer in Korea. KFA closed its doors towards the end of the Japanese colonization and reopened on September 4, 1948. Korea also became a member of FIFA the same year and also joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954.
